- W2896837273 abstract "The “Nutrition, the unrecognized determinant in Alzheimer's disease (NUDAD)” project is designed to identify modifiable dietary risk factors in a prospective cohort of patients at risk of AD (cognitive normal, MCI) and mild AD with a clinical follow-up of three years. In this abstract, the focus is on olfactory and gustatory functioning. Evidence exists that impaired olfactory functioning occurs in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, it is unclear to what degree olfactory and also gustatory functioning are affected, and whether that impaired gustatory functioning is already present in predementia stages. This study aims to identify differences in olfactory and gustatory functioning between patients with AD, MCI and controls with subjective cognitive decline (SCD). As part of the NUDAD project we included 92 patients from the Amsterdam Dementia Cohort: 30 patients with AD (age (mean±SD) 70±9 y, 53% female, MMSE 24±3), 22 MCI (age 70±7, 28% female, MMSE 26±1) and 40 controls with SCD (age 63±7, 55% female, MMSE 29±1). Olfactory functioning comprised olfactory threshold level, discrimination of odors and identification of odors, and was tested using Sniffin’ Sticks. Gustatory recognition threshold was evaluated using Taste Strips. For all tests, scores ranged from 0 to 16 with a higher score indicating a better olfactory or gustatory functioning. Differences between the three groups were tested with age and sex adjusted ANCOVA. Patients with MCI and AD performed worse on olfactory discrimination and identification compared to controls (table 1). No differences were found in olfactory threshold or gustatory functioning. Impaired olfactory function in patients with MCI and AD is largely attributable to impairment in olfactory discrimination and identification, but not to olfactory threshold or gustatory functioning. Insight in olfactory impairment can help understand altered food preferences, dietary intake and nutritional status in patients with MCI and AD." @default.
