- W2896852382 abstract "In spite of its contribution to the development of modern science, performing experiments on live animals (especially vertebrates) has always been imposing numerous disputable questions not only in the field of veterinary medicine and medicine but also in the sphere of ethics and law. The principles of contemporary ethics, oriented towards biocentrism, require animal experiments to be reduced as much as it is possible as well as to be conducted in accordance with fundamental requests of animal welfare, in order to minimize their pain, suffering, fear and stress. Nowadays, the use of animals for experimental purposes is regulated by a series of legal sources of international and national character. Being familiar with these documents is of essential importance for the differentiation between allowed and prohibited, i.e. illegal or criminal treatment of laboratory animals, such as, for example, the criminal offence of animal cruelty. Therefore, the author of this paper attempts to analyze both - ethical codes of veterinary profession and legal acts significant for the protection of laboratory animals, as well as the sentences prescribed for their violations, with a special focus on the provisions of the Law on Animal Welfare and the Criminal Code of the Republic of Serbia." @default.
