- W2896863695 abstract "Useful Field of View (UFOV) training (a.k.a., cognitive speed of processing training) is a process-based, computerized cognitive intervention involving perceptual practice of speeded visual attention tasks. UFOV training is designed to ameliorate information processing difficulties of older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment. A systematic review and meta-analyses of 18 randomized clinical trials on UFOV training was conducted and the evidence was evaluated by Institute of Medicine (IOM) criteria. Across studies UFOV cognitive training improves speed of processing (d=0.22, 95%CI 0.09-0.34, p < .001) and attention (d=0.14, 95%CI 0.02-0.27, p=.027) as well as instrumental activities of daily living (IADL; d=0.27, 95%CI 0.15-0.38, p<.001). UFOV training also reduces dementia risk across 10 years (HR=0.67 95%CI 0.49–0.91, p =.009). Egger's regression and Funnel plots did not reflect publication bias or significant outliers. UFOV training meets IOM criteria. Despite compelling evidence that UFOV training positively affects older adults’ cognitive and functional abilities, ongoing debate regarding the potential efficacy of cognitive training exists. How do we move this field forward? Conclusions from experts in the field of behavioral interventions for cognitive enhancement will be discussed. The first recommendation is for the field to push toward the use of more precise terminology to describe specific interventions and their goals, as the use of general terms such as ‘brain training’ blur the boundaries between functionally distinct interventions and goals, thus contributing to greater misunderstanding. Second, a “gold standard” set of methodologies is needed as the lack of clear methodological standards limits the field's ability to determine what techniques or approaches are effective. Within this, it is recognized that such standards will necessarily differ by study types - e.g., feasibility, mechanistic, efficacy, effectiveness. Finally, clarification as to what constitutes scientifically acceptable evidence of efficacy and/or effectiveness is also required to advance this promising field." @default.
