- W2896906288 abstract "Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a member of galectin family which has been proved to regulate inflammation, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation. It also expresses in the hippocampus and regulates memory function in a mouse model. The relationships between Gal-3 and cognition in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are still less investigated. We recruited normal healthy elderly, patients with MCI and AD from two teaching hospitals in Taiwan. MCI and AD patients underwent clinically functional assessment and a neuropsychological test battery, including Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) and Clinical dementia rating (CDR). Serum level of Gal-3 was measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) in duplicate. We analyzed the association between the cognition and Gal-3 level in healthy controls and patients. In total, 48 healthy elderly, 46 MCI patients, and 97 AD patients were recruited. The AD patients were divided into two groups: very mild to mild AD (CDR 0.5 and 1) and moderate to severe AD (CDR 2 and 3). The mean age of healthy elderly, MCI patients, very mild to mild AD patients and moderate to severe AD patients was 76.8 ± 6.7, 78.1 ± 6.8, 79.3 ± 6.3, and 80.0 ± 6.2 years, respectively. The percentage of APOE (apolipoprotein) ɛ4 carrier status in healthy elderly, MCI patients, and AD patients was 20.8%, 28.3%, and 39.2%, respectively. The one-way analysis of variance with post-hoc Tukey test showed the serum level of Gal-3 was higher in the moderate to severe AD patients compared with controls (p < 0.001) and MCI group (p = 0.07). The correlation analysis between MMSE score and serum Gal-3 level in all subjects showed a significantly negative correlation (r = -0.26, p < 0.001). Serum level of Gal-3 was higher in AD patients compared with controls and MCI group and also associated with MMSE scores. It may be a potential blood-based biomarker in AD." @default.
