In this way, avulsed permanent teeth in adults can be treated following available tooth replantation protocols or using an immediate dental implant in the fresh socket. Aim/Hypothesis The aim of this study was to investigate if the practice of dental implants by general practitioner dentists could influence the decision-making process for treatment of tooth avulsion in adults. Material and Methods Information was collected using a structured interview to general practitioner dentists (GPD) randomly selected from the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first part of the interview was designed to retrieve dentist's personal and professional information. In the second part, two clinical scenarios were proposed considering favorable and unfavorable outcomes for the avulsed tooth- A – Patient arrived in the office within 60 minutes with the tooth in a physiologic storage medium+ or B – Patient arrived in the office after 2 hours minute with the tooth in no storage medium. The participant was asked if the tooth would be replanted or an immediate implant would be installed in each situation. The influence of dental implants practice on each scenario was analyzed using the chi-square test at a significance level of 5%. Results From 259 GPD working in private practice for 11.0 (9.4) years, 144 reported no implant practice (A) while 115 have dental implants practice (B). Both tooth outcome and dental implant practice influenced the treatment (P ≤ 0.05). In favorable outcome, tooth replantation was indicated by 88.9% of A and 74.8% of B group (P < 0.05). Facing an unfavorable outcome, tooth replantation was proposed as treatment by 41.7% of A and 23.5% of B group (P < 0.05). Conclusions and Clinical Implications It is possible to conclude that the expertise with dental implants can influence the decision-making process in the treatment of tooth avulsion in adults." @default.
