- W2896965220 abstract "Laser roll bonding is a new process involving simultaneous laser heating and roll bonding of sheet metals. In the present work, the process was used to join dissimilar metal combinations of mild steel to pure aluminum and mild steel to 5052 aluminum alloy. The combination is useful in automobile industry to reduce the weight of structural parts. The interface of laser roll bonded joints consists of intermetallic compounds of iron and aluminium. Thickness of the interface layer and type of intermetallic compound present in it strongly affect the joint strength and formability. The process parameters such as roll pressure, laser power and travel speed were varied to study their effect on the interface layer thickness and its structure. Strength of the joints was tested by tensile shear test and formability was tested by Erichsen cupping test. The results showed that the strengt h of joint increases with the decrease in the interface layer thickness, but in the absence of interface layer, no bond is formed. The shear strength of laser roll bonded specimen ranged between 21.8 and 55.9 MPa.
