Through the use Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMATs), the temate® 2700 has proven capabilities to provide full volumetric, ultrasonic inspection of laser welds in tailor welded blanks, body assembly, drive-shafts, ring gear components, and other automotive parts. The temate® 2700 directly inspects final weld quality by using patented EMAT technology so that typical laser weld defects such as pinholes, porosity, lack of fusion/penetration, and concavity are detected and sorted prior to shipment and further processing.To accommodate applications that span tailor welded blanks to circumferential drive shaft welds, the temate® 2700 has been designed in a modular fashion to readily adapt to the many various laser welding manufacturing arrangements. Most simply, the temate® 2700 consists of the Data Acquisition Cabinet and remote sensors. The two-channel EMAT sensor rapidly scans adjacent to the weld line either by sensor movement or by relative part movement, depending on installation configuration. As the weld moves relative to the temate® 2700 sensor, the EMAT transmitter generates ultrasonic pulses at very high frequencies, which are focused at the weld zone. The ultrasonic shear wave generated completely fills the volume of the welded blank, resulting in complete coverage: top & bottom surfaces, and internal volumes.Discontinuities and imperfections at the weld zone cause a reflected ultrasonic signal, which in turn is detected by the EMAT receiver. The temate® 2700 continually monitors the two receiver channels and digitizes this information for display on the system control monitor. This direct and quantitative scan display is an intuitive graph of weld quality and removes subjectivity of manual, visual inspection.Two specific applications are described: (1) Laser Welded Blank fuspection, and (2) Drive Shaft fuspection.
