- W2897035746 abstract "LED lighting has become the lighting of choice for plant factories. Control of the spectrum and light level given to plants has been a major reason for applying LED lighting in order to optimize photosynthesis, photo morphogenesis, and nutritional control in plants. Besides light, plants require the uptake of important nutrients such as nitrogen. The preferred source of nitrogen for plants is nitrate. Green leafy vegetables contain relatively high concentrations of nitrate compared to other food and constitute a significant source of nitrate to the consumer. Because of human health concerns, nitrate content is regulated in Europe. In this paper, we are showing that nitrate levels in vegetables grown in plant factories or greenhouse can be significantly reduced with an appropriate lighting strategy without decreasing efficiency of the growth. For example, with a preharvest treatment of 2–5 days, 100% red light could significantly reduce the nitrate level. Results on controlling the nitrate level at harvest are shown for various crops such as lettuces, arugula, and baby leaf spinach. Our research shows that the best light recipe is obtained by optimizing the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) light integral. The light spectrum plays only a secondary role to reduce the nitrate level. We also discuss how to achieve extremely low nitrate levels (< 500 mg kg–1) using a combination of growth factors (irrigation, plant density) and how to choose an optimum daily light integral and spectrum during growth and preharvest treatment combined with an adapted irrigation strategy." @default.
