- W2897088071 abstract "Because Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects such a large portion of the population, it is a public health concern. Exercise is integral to slowing the progression of AD, especially for people in the early stages. A faculty mentor guided Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students in a service learning project in collaboration with the local Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association to develop a Movement and Memory Program. We utilized a structured, community-based participatory model (PRECEDE-PROCEED) to develop the exercise based intervention program. PRECEDE (phases 1-4) provides the process that leads to an intervention. PROCEED (phases 5-8) describe how to proceed with the intervention and evaluation of the intervention program. During phase 1, focus groups and interviews with stakeholders identified important quality of life (QOL) issues. In phase 2, relevant epidemiological factors were assessed through literature review to determine changeability of important issues identified in phase 1. In phase 3, predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors were identified and prioritized to establish measurable program objectives which included increasing knowledge/awareness about brain health and increasing the amount of exercise. Administrative and policy issues impacting the planned intervention were explored in phase 4 and objectives modified accordingly. The intervention (phase 5) was implementation of a multi-session group based Movement and Memory Program. Classes were held at the chapter office led by DPT students. Sustainability was addressed via recruitment of volunteers. DPT students developed a written curriculum for future use. In phase 6, process changes were made during the multi-week sessions based on feedback. Impact (phase 7) evaluation data were gathered to gauge changes in knowledge about brain health and in minutes of physical activity. Outcome (phase 8) evaluation will be conducted 6 months post-intervention to assess effect of the program on QOL issues identified during phase 1. Service learning using the PRECEDE PROCEED model fosters civic responsibility for students in doctoring professions. Use of the PRECEDE-PROCEED model can enable health professionals to actively and systematically participate in improving the well-being of people with AD. This project offers a scalable example of how to provide services using a participatory, data-driven planning model." @default.
