The defocused CO2 laser was used as a preheating source prior to subsequent processing of the ceramic-coated material. This paper only covers the results obtained from the preheating experiments. The subsequent processes to which the laser-heated materials were subjected are not covered in this paper. The effects of such parameters as dwell time and laser power were evaluated in detail. The damage threshold of the metal, the ceramic/metal bond coat and the ceramic layer were assessed in terms of microstructural and property alterations. The microstructural and property alterations have been related to the laser process parameters.
