- W2897533729 abstract "In 1995 I approached Peter Donnelly at McMaster University about the possibility of conducting an ethnographic study of ticket ‘scalpers’ (men and women who illegally sell tickets above their ‘face value’ for sports events, concerts, plays/musicals and festivals). I thought he would reject my request outright. As a Master’s student in the Department of Sociology at McMaster, I found considerable allure in sociology’s tradition of ethnographically studying groups on the margins of social respectability. I knew several ticket scalpers in Canada, and possessed a little background knowledge about their subculture. To my astonishment, Peter encouraged me without a pause. Over the next two years, I spent several hundred hours ethnographically immersed in ticket scalping scenes in Toronto, Ontario, as the bedrock of my Master’s thesis. I refl ect on this study fondly on a regular basis, for a million and one reasons. From time to time, I wonder whether or not I would be able to conduct a similar study today.
