- W2897588546 abstract "Adherence to the Mediterranean-DASH diet Intervention for Neurodegeneration Delay (MIND) diet has shown promise as a strategy to promote healthy cognitive aging. However, such findings require replication in independent cohorts. Accordingly, we examined whether adherence to the MIND diet was associated with cognitive markers of preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) or vascular brain injury (VBI) in 2,092 dementia- and stroke-free participants (age 62 [SD, 9] years, 46% men) from the community-based Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort. Dietary intake was assessed at three time points using a validated semi-quantitative Harvard food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Dietary components were scored in accordance with the original MIND diet papers; there are 15 dietary components in which 10 are considered healthy and five are considered unhealthy with overall scores ranging from 0-15. We generated a MIND diet score by averaging across 3 Heart Study examination cycles (exams 5 [1991-1995], 6 [1995-1998], and 7 [1998-2001]) prior to neuropsychological (NP) assessment. Markers of general cognition, preclinical AD (episodic memory), and VBI (executive function, processing speed, abstract reasoning and visual memory) were measured using a detailed NP battery administered close to examination cycle 7. We used a series of linear regression models to relate the cumulative MIND diet score to performance across each cognitive outcome, adjusting for age, sex, calorie intake, education, the time interval between exam7 and cognitive assessment, BMI, physical activity, diabetes, smoking, depression, CVD, hypertension and total cholesterol to HDL ratio. Every unit increase in the MIND diet score was associated with superior global cognition [β±SE (p): 0.04±0.01(<0.01)], episodic memory [0.12±0.05(0.01)], processing speed [0.01±0.004(<0.01)], abstract reasoning [0.11± 0.04(0.01)], and visual memory [0.12±0.04(<0.01)]. Significant interactions were observed with the APOE genotype. Stratified analyses revealed that MIND diet adherence was associated with superior global cognition [0.08±0.02(0.001)], episodic memory [0.42±0.11(<0.001)], executive function [0.02±0.01(0.04)], and processing speed [0.03±0.01(<0.01)] among APOE ɛ4 carriers. Higher adherence to the MIND diet was independently associated with markers of preclinical AD and VBI. Further studies are needed to elucidate whether adopting the MIND diet can alter cognitive trajectories with aging, particularly in APOE ɛ4 carriers." @default.
