- W28975888 abstract "Dysentery refers to an illness characterized by frequent passage of stool containing blood and mucus accompanied by painful abdominal cramps. Bacillary dysentery or shigellosis is caused by members of the Shigella species and a group of pathogenic strains of E.coli known as enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC). It is observed that EIEC cause dysentery that is clinically indistinguishable from that caused by members of the Shigella species. Over the years, research has provided significant insights into the mechanisms used by Shigella and EIEC to interact with host tissues. These insights reveal a family of pathogens that are master cell biologists, and that reprogram host cells and exploit the actions of host phagocytes to serve the needs of the parasite. Moreover, the unique evolution of these bacteria has largely promoted the understanding of pathogen evolution and often drives the discovery of novel evolutionary pathways. Shigella and EIEC have also served as models of several aspects of pathogen biology, and provide paradigms that can be applied to other disease-causing bacteria." @default.
