- W2897637693 abstract "To date research on the relation between coping and mood in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has been sparse, and mostly within the person with MCI, ignoring the care partner. Our investigation examined the coping-mood association considering both within and between persons with MCI and their care partners. This dyadic analysis employed a cross-sectional design using baseline data from an ongoing study examining the effect of disclosing biomarker-derived Alzheimer's risk information on coping in MCI. Participants included 65 dyads of persons with MCI (63% male, 91% white, aged 52-95 years) and their care partners (79% female, 89% white, aged 21-90 years, 72% spouses). Participants were interviewed regarding dysfunctional coping strategies using the Brief COPE, depressive symptoms using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression and state anxiety using the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Multi-level modeling was used to fit actor-partner interdependence models assuming distinguishable dyad members to examine relations between outcomes (depressive symptoms, state anxiety) with the predictor (dysfunctional coping strategies) for persons with MCI and their care partners. For anxiety, an actor effect was found, suggesting that persons with MCI and their care partners using dysfunctional coping strategies appear to be more anxious (b=0.488, p<.001). However, an interaction was also observed between the dyad member type and dysfunctional coping strategies of the actor (b=-0.248, p=.05), indicating that the association between dysfunctional coping strategies and anxiety depends on the type of dyad member. Care partners showed a stronger positive association between dysfunctional coping strategies and anxiety (b=0.636) compared to persons with MCI (b=0.240). No significant partner effects/interactions were found (p≥.05). For depressive symptoms, only an actor effect was observed, suggesting that individuals using dysfunctional coping strategies appear to have greater depressive symptoms (b=0.469, p<.001), regardless of the type of dyad member. Examination of the six individual dysfunctional coping strategies revealed similar patterns for 1) actor effects/interactions for self-blame with anxiety and 2) actor effects for behavioral disengagement, self-distraction, self-blame, and substance use with depressive symptoms. These results underscore the importance of considering both the person with MCI and their care partner and their interplay when investigating psychological/behavioral outcomes/predictors." @default.
