- W2897707960 abstract "Hapax, one word used by each person in a conversation, is a doubt in Alzheimer's disease research. No study has shown any result in hapax. People have always had different occupations, professions, and activities. Some of the words and expressions they used a lot were kept in their long term memory and are still preserved. Objective: To compare the quantity and percentage of hapax between healthy controls and Alzheimer's disease patients. 20 minute conversation of 23 people with AD and 23 healthy controls were analyzed by Stablex- an assisted computer program and then by Kruskas-Wallis test. AD patients were 10 men and 13 women aged 78 to 82, 12 mild and 11 moderate, and controls were 8 male and 15 female, aged 65 and older. All patients were from PROTER- Old Age Program - ambulatory care of the Institute of Psychiatry, School of Medicine University of São Paulo. People with AD had 4 to 26 years of education and participants had Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) scores 13 to 30. Controls had 4 to 18 years of education. There was significance when comparing the number of hapax of controls and moderate AD p= 0,003 and between mild and moderate AD p= 0,009, and when comparing the percentages there was only significance between the mild and moderate AD p= 0,023. Comparing hapaxes between controls and AD patients will increase the understanding of words preserved in the memory and, also will help to create new strategies to communicate with people with AD." @default.
