- W289779930 abstract "This chapter discusses tendon injuries with special focus to the hand. Tendons and their surrounding structures may be injured in a single acute episode or the injury may occur more subtly by repetitive episodes of minor trauma that occur when the tendon is subjected to excessive use. The chapter focuses on acute injuries to tendons, tenosynovitis, and insertional tendinitis. Once the diagnosis of a tendon injury is made, most patients will require referral to a hand specialist. Acute tendon injuries may follow open or closed trauma. Open injuries to tendons may either be of a tidy or of an untidy nature. Most tidy wounds are simple lacerations, with glass the most frequent injuring agent. Untidy wounds are usually complex injuries involving many structures apart from the tendons themselves. Most of the mutilating industrial injuries fall into this last category. Acute closed injuries to tendons usually result in an injury at the insertion of the tendon; a healthy tendon rarely ruptures along its length." @default.
