• W2897933417 abstract "Alzheimer's research relies heavily on human subject volunteers. Between January and April 2018, Bioclinica Research in the Villages, Florida has completed prescreen interviews on 331 volunteer subjects presenting for Alzheimer's Dementia (AD) studies. Male and female subjects, predominantly Caucasian, middle class retirees in an active retirement community, were asked during the prescreening interview if they had concerns about their memory. During prescreening, male and female subjects ages 50-85 were interviewed about memory concerns. To evaluate for the reliability of self-reports for this population, a sample of prior subjects, who met criteria for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) through on site clinical interviews with caregivers, were reviewed for the existence of self-reported memory concerns at screening. Of the 331 subjects who voluntarily prescreened for AD studies, 204 were women, and 127 were men. Self-reported memory concerns were reported by 47% of females and 34% of males. However, 80% of subjects questioned about memory (86% of males, 77% of females) reported no memory concerns beyond what they considered to be “normal aging”. In the sample of prior subjects who met initial criteria for MCI (n=84), 79% had reported concerns about their memory at screening. Between January and April 2018, almost twice as many females as males have voluntarily presented for consideration for AD research at a research site in the Villages, FL. Increased marketing efforts for male subjects may be indicated. Overall, the majority of subjects who voluntarily presented for consideration for AD research were not reporting memory concerns beyond age associated memory loss. These results indicate that voluntary AD research subjects are motivated by factors other than personal memory concerns. These factors could include family history or the desire to contribute to a cure, although more investigation is needed in this area. Finally, of the subjects who met initial criteria for MCI, most acknowledged memory concerns, indicating that insight was intact for the majority of subjects presenting for AD research studies. This finding indicates that the self-reports of memory from this population are reliable.
