- W2897957061 abstract "Due to an unprecedented rate of population aging, South Korea is facing a dementia epidemic. For this reason, the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia (KLOSCAD) was launched in 2009 with support from the Korean Health Industry Development Institute to investigate the epidemiology, biopsychosocial risk factors, and outcomes of dementia and dementia-related conditions. The KLOSCAD is the first nationwide multi-center population-based prospective cohort study. At the end of 2009, 12,694 individuals were randomly sampled from residents aged 60 years or older who lived in 13 districts across South Korea. In the baseline assessment, which was conducted from November 2010 through October 2012, 6,818 (53.7%) individuals participated. Follow-up assessments have been conducted every two years, with the first follow-up conducted between November 2012 and October 2014, and the second between November 2014 and October 2016. The third is now in progress, and will span from November 2016 to October 2018. Comprehensive assessments on cognition, mood, BPSD, ADL, comorbid illnesses, physical and neurologic examination and laboratory tests and quality of life were conducted. The cumulative drop-out rate at the second follow-up assessment was 38.7%. Among the 6,818 participants at the baseline assessment, 5,131 responded to the first follow-up assessment and 4,181 to the second follow-up assessment. The proportions of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) were 5.0% and 27.0% at the baseline assessment, 4.7% and 24.1% out of 5,131 in the first follow-up, and 5.4% and 20.9% out of 4,181 in the second follow-up, respectively. Among the 1,838 participants with MCI at baseline, 1,066 (58.0 %) completed the second follow-up. Among them, 93(8.7 %) were converted to dementia while 472 (44.3 %) were reverted to cognitively normal the in the second follow-up. The cumulative mortality rate during the 4-year follow-up period of the participants who had MCI at the baseline was 8.8 % (161 out of 1,838), which was higher than that of cognitively normal participants at the baseline assessment (4.0 %, 181 out of 4,572). The KLOSCAD may contribute to our understanding on the cognitive aging and dementia of East Asians as well as Koreans. (Grant no. HI09C1379.)" @default.
