• W2898071391 abstract "Behavioural and Psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are the most important clinical features of dementia that contributes to significant caregiver burden. This study attempts to study the clinical profile and correlates of behavioral and psychological symptoms in elderly with dementia (BPSD) seeking treatment in a tertiary care Neuropsychiatric Centre from South India. Cross sectional study of patients with dementia attending Geriatric clinic at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, India. Socio-demographic details and Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) scores based on informant report and clinician evaluation were assessed. Data obtained was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean, frequencies, and Spearman's correlation. The sample size consisted of 105 patients with dementia (49 males and 56 females) seeking treatment from Geriatric clinic at NIMHANS, Bengaluru. The mean age of the study group was 69.46 years. Alzheimer's Dementia was the most common subtype (82%). The Median NPI score of the study sample was 26. The results revealed that behavioural and psychological symptoms are very common (more than 70%) in patients with dementia. Irritability and Lability, Agitation/Aggression, Sleep and nighttime behavior disorders, Appetite/Eating changes were the most common behavioural and psychological symptoms in patients with dementia. The total NPI Score had significant negative correlation with Hindi Mental State Examination score and positive correlation with global dementia severity. The behavioural and psychological symptoms are very common in patients with dementia. Prevalence of BPSD in this sample could be influenced by factors such as site of the study (hospital based) and higher prevalence of moderate and severe dementia in the study group." @default.
