- W2898602600 abstract "The essential trace element selenium is present in our diet in different forms and concentrations. An insufficiently low intake will cause a status of selenium deficiency that is associated with an increased risk for developing certain diseases including cancer, infectious, autoimmune and other diseases. On the other hand, an acute or chronic over-supplementation with high amounts of selenium will likewise challenge our health, and signs of selenosis may develop that include nail and hair loss besides other symptoms. The human organism has developed a number of biochemical pathways safeguarding a prioritised supply of the most important tissues and organs with the essential trace element in order to avoid the development of health-relevant states of selenium deficiency or selenosis. This chapter highlights some of the underlying mechanisms, scientific achievements and open questions regarding the role of selenium in the human diet and its metabolism." @default.
