- W2898810085 abstract "Objectives: Dietary sodium affects fluctuations in blood pressure and vascular function. Cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1), a stress-induced cytokine that belongs to the interleukin 6 family, which is released by cells in response to potentially harmful stresses, plays pivotal roles in congestive heart failure, hypertension and arterial stiffness. Here, we performed a randomized trial to confirm the effect of altered salt intake on the serum CT-1 levels in human. Methods: Forty-four subjects (18–65 years of age) were selected from a rural community of northern China. All subjects sequentially maintained a baseline period for 3 days, low-salt diet (LS) for 7 days (3.0 g/day of NaCl), and high-salt (HS) diet for an additional 7 days (18.0 g/day of NaCl). Results: For the whole group, the CT-1 levels were significantly increased in the HS period compared to the LS period (293.50 ± 137.70 pg/ml vs. 360.40 ± 162.83 pg/ml, P = 0.04). The serum CT-1 levels decreased significantly with a change from the baseline period to the LS diet (389.19 ± 131.85 pg/ml vs. 274.39 ± 107.86 pg/ml, P = 0.013) and increased with a change from the LS to HS diet (274.39 ± 107.86 pg/ml vs. 391.78 ± 185.12 pg/ml, P = 0.036) in salt-sensitive (SS) but not salt-resistant (SR) individuals. In addition, a significant positive relationship was observed between the change in CT-1 levels and change in systolic blood pressure (SBP) as well as the mean arterial pressure (MAP) from LS to HS period (r = 0.376,P = 0.012;r = 0.311, P = 0.04). The serum CT-1 levels of females and individuals who had a higher total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ratio (CHOL/HDL ratio, males ≥4.5, females≥3.5) were more susceptible to the effects of salt intake intervention. Conclusion: The present study indicated that variations in dietary salt intake affected the serum CT-1 conc" @default.
