- W2898824957 abstract "Objectives: To access an imaging-based ablation strategy for improving effectiveness of renal denervation (RDN) with an integrated catheter. Methods: A catheter integrated with ultrasound imaging probe and acoustic ablation transducer was used to provide ultrasonography around renal-artery and guide acoustic RDN. Ultrasonographic evaluation of renal nerve density was conducted in 27 hypertensive dogs. Three were killed for histological study, 20 were subjected to RDN using imaging-based site selection strategy and four for sham. Post-RDN, 4 dogs were killed immediately while the rest were killed after 28 days for follow-up study. Results: In ultrasonography, renal nerves exhibited linear/tubular-like echoes and the densities varied across arterial regions and individual animals. In RDN group, 170/256 of ultrasonographically evaluated sites with higher nerve density were selected for ablation. An average energy emission of 10.6 times was delivered to the bilateral renal artery. The BP significantly decreased compared to the baseline (−12.6/ − 9.1 mmHg, p < 0.05) and to the sham group (−10.5/−10.1 mmHg, p < 0.05) at 28-days. The denervation effects were confirmed by pathological findings without significant ablation-related complications. Conclusion: The ultrasound imaging-based RDN can be safely and effectively achieved in this animal model and had the potential to be a novel procedure for improving RDN." @default.
