- W2898825065 abstract "Objective: The goal of the current research study is to determine whether eye tracking measures can be utilized to reliably track concussion symptoms in concussed sports athletes. Background: There are many challenges that must be overcome with regards to the diagnosis and treatment of concussions. First, the lack of a repeatable and reliable diagnostic test can result in patients who have received concussions not being diagnosed as such. There are other patients who try to deliberately lie about or concealing their symptoms because they don’t want to be engaged in a treatment procedure that might prevent them from engaging in daily activities such as driving or participating in sports. Lack of baseline assessment for concussions test makes it difficult for medical doctors to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. Design/Methods: Six ocular tests using an eye tracker was developed for athletes with concussion symptoms. Participants wear a mobile, head-mounted eye tracker and are administered visual assessment tasks which are presented on a monitor in front of him/her. The tests include stimuli which examine ocular motor capabilities, cognitive tunneling, visual search and scanning ability. The experimental design also includes administering the same assessments on an aged-matched, non-concussed control group. Significant differences between concussed and non-concussed patients in focusing, tracing and tracking moving objects are anticipated. Results: The concussed patients showed difficulties in acquiring and following (pursuit scanning) objects as well as with tracing the outlines of objects with their eyes. Conclusions: Concussed patients will demonstrate more longitudinal deviations. Eye tracking is a useful tool to measure the severity of eye movement impairment with eye tracker and to help neurologists assess the healing trend with executing follow-up tests.
