• W2898867946 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Poisoning is an acute medical emergency. Organophosphorus (OP) poison, being easily available and relatively cheaper, is mostly used by people for suicide. Early diagnosis and timely treatment by Atropine can significantly reduce the mortality and morbidity of victims. Only few studies have been done about organophosphorus poisoning. This study is done to see detail aspects of OP poisoning including personal, socioeconomic and demographic factors as well treatment and outcome of all OP poisoning admitted at Bir Hospital, a tertiary care referral center of Nepal.METHOD: This is Prospective observational study including all acute organophosphorus poisoning cases, who were admitted in general ward or ICU of Bir Hospital from January 1st 2015 toDecember 31st 2015.RESULT: A total of 84 cases of acute organophosphorus poisoning were admitted in Bir Hospital over one year period. OP poisoning victims were more female (62%) than male (38%). Relativelyyoung and earning age group between 15-30 years of age (55%) are sufferer. Poisoning was found more among married (69%) people, students (40%) and household workers (31%). Most of thecases were from lower to middle class (83%) of Kathmandu valley (63%) and most of them were literate (71%). Most commonly used OP compound was Dichlorvos (57%) and Methyl Parathion(24%). Poisoning occurred mainly early morning of the day between 6am to 12 noon (62%) and victims were brought to hospital within first 3hrs of poisoning (36%). The Motive of poisoning was mostly suicidal (93%) and the reason behind poisoning was financial problem (55%), domestic quarrel (27%) and personal cause (15%). Most of the cases were managed at general wards (77%). Within 6-10 days of hospital stay (52%) most of the cases were discharged. Overall mortality ofOP poisoning in this study is 8%. CONCLUSION: Due to easily availability and cheaper price, middle to lower class of young age group people use OP poison with suicidal ideation. Early and timely treatment of victims at hospital with Atropine can significantly reduce the mortality." @default.
