- W2899364067 abstract "Initially viewed as the central pawn in the pathologic chain of allergic reactions, the mast cell, although described microscopically over a century ago, remains an enigma. The richness of substances preformed and deposited within the cytoplasmic granules characteristic for this cell or newly synthesized after the activation of membrane receptors triggered a peculiar interest for the clarification of the intimate relationship established by the mast cell with the antigens or with the other immune cells, within the connective extracellular matrix. Nowadays, the origin of mast cell is established and its behavior is explained in accordance with the nature of the molecules stored within the cytoplasm. However, the mast cell keep displaying new abilities in other pathological conditions, justifying the major interest linked to the position and role performed in supporting the development and progression of tumor cells, especially through the involvement in tumor neoangiogenesis. This review focus on the complex functions of the mast cell, highlighting its pathogenic potential based on the activation process and mediators’ biological properties." @default.
