- W2899753002 abstract "Population-based clinical outcomes and healthcare utilization among patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) are lacking, especially in Asia. The aim was to describe survival and healthcare utilization among incident VTE patients in Taiwan from 2005 to 2014. Nationwide data from Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) were utilized from 2000 to 2014 and national mortality data were linked to ascertain death date. Incident VTE patients were identified between 2005-2014 with at least 5-year look-back period to ascertain first hospitalization of VTE diagnosis. Patients were then followed from the incident VTE admission up to earliest of death, censored at termination of NHI coverage without further medical usage, or 31 December 2014. For incident VTE patients with initial hospitalization from 2005 through 2011, healthcare utilization during the subsequent three years were described. A total of 73,406 incident VTE patients identified from 2005 through 2014; 69,051 (94%) of them survived during incident VTE hospitalization with 1-year, 3-year and 5-year survival probability for all-cause mortality being 0.74, 0.61 and 0.53 respectively. Among 73,406 incident VTE patients, 48,951(66.7%) were identified with potential follow-up of at least 3 years. Within 3 years after incident VTE, over half of the patients had more than two subsequent hospital admissions of any cause and with a median total hospital stay of 26 days. Approximately 38% of patients had at least one subsequent intensive care unit admission. Median number of emergency room visits and out-patient visits was 1 and 47 respectively. In recent decade, more than 90% incident VTE patients survived the initial hospitalization; however, only around 50% of them survived more than 5 years after discharge. As current VTE management guidelines indicate that subsequent treatment should be of limited duration, frequent visits within 3 years after discharge suggests that VTE patients may be comorbid with diseases seeking frequent medical visits." @default.
