• W2900192997 abstract "Objective: NINDS/NIH and DOD collaborated to develop version 1.0 CDE recommendations for Biomechanical Devices used in Blunt Head Impact and Blast Exposure Dynamics. The goals of this project are to facilitate research by providing a framework for data collection using standardized formats with consistent data definitions and to more efficiently share and aggregate data. Background: In January 2017, a working group (WG) of biomechanical device experts in blast, blunt head impact and inertial loading exposure formed to develop CDE recommendations. These CDEs were designed to complement existing NINDS disease CDE recommendations for traumatic brain injury and Sports-Related Concussion, but may be useful for standardizing data exchange from any biomechanical devices. Design/Methods: The WG divided into three subgroups: Head Accelerometry, Impact Video and Blast Exposure. The Head Accelerometry subgroup focused on blunt head impact data collection in sports/activities. The Impact Video subgroup’s purview was the use of video information to confirm device measurements. The Blast Exposure subgroup compared the types of metadata currently collected using blast sensors. Across the subgroups, members reviewed metadata describing sensors/devices, data collected by a researcher/clinician at the time of an exam, and data elements describing the features of a specific event commonly collected in prior research involving biomechanical devices. Results: The WG’s end products include CDE metadata, template case report forms and guidelines documents. Public feedback was elicited for six weeks before version 1.0 recommendations were made available for use through the NINDS CDE website in late February 2018. Conclusions: The new Biomechanical Devices CDE recommendations are a valuable starting point for researchers that allows for more robust metadata and future data-sharing across studies. As research in the biomechanical device field progresses, updates will be made to these CDE recommendations since the NINDS CDEs are an evolving resource.
