- W2900434976 abstract "This chapter presents an overview of cholesterol absorption, although from an integrative view, cholesterol absorption and synthesis are interrelated and contribute reciprocally to whole-body cholesterol homeostasis. The modulation of cholesterol absorption via complex interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic factors will also be focused on. Cholesterol absorption efficiency varies greatly among individuals and key advances in understanding the influence of genetics on interindividual variability of cholesterol response, especially polymorphisms of several proteins/transporters and enzymes involved in the intestinal uptake or export of cholesterol, will be examined, particularly in the case of gene-diet interactions. In the near future, understanding the effects of these genetic variants could help establish optimal lipid-lowering treatment options." @default.
