- W2900458863 abstract "To establish the definition of fetal ventriculomegaly (VM) at 11–14 weeks gestation, to examine the association of early VM with fetal anomalies and determine outcomes. Fetal VM was defined as bilateral separation of the hypoplastic choroid plexuses (CPs) from superior borders of the lateral ventricles. In these cases the upper parts of the lateral ventricles were abnormally fluid-filled and ‘empty’ from CPs. From 2010–2015 we prospectively performed 2150 early pregnancy anomaly scans (EPAS) at 11–14 weeks for high-risk women. All scans included extended examination of the brain. Lateral ventricles were assessed in axial views with special attention to appearance and position of the CPs. 3D neurosonography was performed for systematic examination of the brain in all cases of suspected VM. Association with other anomalies, and fetal outcome were recorded. VM was found in 35 cases. VM was associated with other anomalies in 27 (77%) cases when the outcome was invariably poor and included 7 (20%) with a chromosomal abnormality (5 trisomy 13, one trisomy 18 and one triploidy), 3 amniotic band syndrome, 3 skeletal dysplasias, one each of Fryn's syndrome, spina bifida, VACTER and FADS, as well as unclassified multiple anomalies. VM was an isolated finding at presentation in 8 cases (23%), but all had an abnormal outcome including persistent VM (2), Joubert syndrome (1), Williams syndrome (1), agenesis of corpus callosum (1), osteogenesis imperfecta (1), CMV infection (1) and posterior fossa cyst. In 4 of these cases VM had resolved by the early second trimester. We have established the definition for 11–14 weeks VM. The underlying etiology and association with other findings is very broad. This finding has a uniformly unfavourable outcome, even in isolated cases with spontaneous resolution." @default.
