- W2900533384 abstract "This paper focus on the game of transmission and retelling inherent in Henry James's novella 'The Turn of the Screw' and focuses on the 16 film adaptations that have been made since the 1950s. James wrote the tale as an experiment in form--the perfect hybrid of drama and the novel and an amusette to catch those not easily caught, as he said. The narrative set-up involves the I-narrator turning over his authority of the story to a woman, the governess, who tells her tale imperfectly, leaving too many blanks to fill and allowing for two contradictory readings of the tale. For years, critics and scholars fell into the trap, devising wildly different and often improbable explanations for what actually occurred in the tale, and starting in the mid-1950s, it was film-makers' turn. When assessing the 16 feature film adaptations that have been made of James's sinister little romance, we notice that the interpretations fall into three basic categories --those that present the ghosts as being real, those that present the governess as being mad and hallucinating, and, far more interesting, those that try to preserve the ambiguity of the original work but that find more radical ways in which to do it, upping the ante on both sides of the equation, as it were. Even more surprisingly, more recent adaptations, notably those by Spanish film-makers, have used James's tale to focus on forms of social injustice, such as discrimination against homosexuals and religious sexual repression." @default.
