- W2900817232 abstract "In May 2000 the finance ministers of ASEAN, Japan, China and Koreaannounced that they had agreed to develop a network of currency swapand repurchase agreements, collectively known as the Chiang Mai Initiative(CMI). As a result of negotiations over the next three years, total fundspotentially available under this initiative amounted to $36.5 billion as ofDecember 2003. The significance of this process remains contested. Doregional liquidity facilities under the CMI amount to a significant steptowards enhancing regional financial stability? Do they mark a movetowards greater regional independence from global crisis managementinstitutions dominated by the US? Is the CMI a precursor to monetarycooperation in the region? This chapter examines these questions. Thefollowing sections review the events leading up to and surrounding theCMI, discuss the significance of the CMI and place monetary cooperation in the context of trade and economic integration initiatives. Thechapter concludes with an assessment of the prospects for closer monetaryintegration in East Asia, arguing that political issues are more likely to be significant obstacles to cooperation than economic differences, butmonetary cooperation could nonetheless develop further in the future." @default.
