- W2901691607 abstract "Abstract Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy allows for the direct visualization and treatment of pathologies involving the stomach, small bowel, and surrounding organs. Mucosal changes, polyps, and tumors can be diagnosed, biopsied, excised, or sampled. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding lesions and ulcers can be controlled with thermal or mechanical therapies. Strictures and external compression can be dilated using hydrostatic balloons or self-expanding metal stents. Biliary and pancreatic pathologies can be identified and biopsied or drained transluminally. The small bowel beyond the ligament of Treitz can be investigated using video capsule endoscopy and balloon endoscopy. Endoscopy has thus become a cornerstone in providing diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities to the skilled gastrointestinal surgeon." @default.
