Abstract Cicero’s discussion of senectus – a long-standing theme in the ancient tradition – in the Cato Maior significantly influenced subsequent debates with its ideological topoi , and persisted in the literary memory of both poets and prose writers. This study (a) defines the meaning and ideology of the Cato Maior against the background of Cicero’s life and political career; (b) casts light on the historical and cultural context of Maximian; (c) compares the topoi de senectute in the Cato Maior with those of Maximian, which are radically different. Lastly, this paper examines the characterization of exile as a death-in-life experience in Cicero’s letters and in Maximian’s description of the senex as an exile from life." @default.
