- W29030809 abstract "The history of life on Earth has been punctuated by numerous extinction events, including five great mass extinctions that occurred in the past 600 million years. Our understanding of these events has progressed rapidly over the past few decades, especially with improvements in technology enabling more precise measurements of the ages of rocks, but the causes of these events are still debated. The extinction that occurred in the Late Ordovician is associated with an episode of global cooling, possibly to that of the Late Devonian. The events in the Late Permian and Late Triassic are associated with episodes of rapid global warming, and the eruption of major volcanic provinces. The end Cretaceous witnessed further eruptions and an extraterrestrial impact. These past crises demonstrate the resilience of the Earth's biota, and furthermore their study might help us better understand the responses of the biosphere to present day climatic changes." @default.
