- W2903668032 abstract "Between 1377 and 1382, not more than in a five year period, series of kings – partly in parallel with them, partly following them – and a remarkable part of the social elite were replaced in the area of Western Europe. This essay focuses on the English changes through the Chronicle of Thomas Walsingham entirely from the death of the Black Prince until the enthronement of Henry IV. Several components can be considered as reasons for the weakening royal power in the age of Richard II: his uncles’ influence, the king’s personal age and the unsolved social issues all contributed to the decrease of the royal authority. Nevertheless, examining the chronological tables a sharp change in the European generations is noticeable, until the midst of 1380s Walsingham mainly focuses on the religious differences and the effects of the generation change only appears at a higher rate from the second half of the decade. Many times – basing on the text of the chronicle – the historian personal point of view appears; in certain descriptions it is externalized to the whole aristocracy to contrast them with the reigning social elite of Edward III’s generation." @default.
