• W2903742306 abstract "This chapter summarizes advances in phytoremediation, mainly focusing on the economic advantages compared to traditional remediation. Several advances through national, regional, and local projects have been achieved during the past few years, mainly in developed countries; however, phytoremediation is still not recognized as a common solution to alleviate environmental degradation. Here, we describe some important viewpoints that should be considered for sustainable phytoremediation, such as a combination of environmental, time, economic, social, and educational perspectives. Complementarily, we also collect a detailed list of plants that have been successfully used for restoration purposes. The first section—the core of this chapter—describes, in detail, some fields that can be explored in the search of commercial opportunities for phytoremediation in order to address the challenge of the remediation and management of the increasing number and areas of contaminated sites. The remediation of contaminated sites with appropriate and economically valuable crops is a dynamic strategy to provide additional benefits in the form of phytoproducts, such as aromatic essential oils, pulp–paper biomass, biochar, energy and biodiesel, ameliorated crops through biofortification, ornamental plants, or differently derived wood products. Besides that, some other interesting market niches based on the same principle as phytomining, green roof construction or smart architecture and engineering projects, are also explored. We further describe some important physical, technical, and social limitations that constrain the development of phytoremediation technologies. Our evidence-based suggestions offer the potential to contribute in the field of sustainable phytoremediation and can be helpful for those interested in taking the first steps into the phytoremediation market.
