- W2904101293 abstract "This chapter discusses the several principles with regard to an equal rights provision in the Constitution. It examines the status of women today and considers how an equal rights provision in the Constitution would have affected that status. It looks at the civic order, government, the private sector, and state laws. Citizens have responsibilities and duties in democratic governments. Until the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, women were not permitted to vote in most elections. The chapter examines that impact in government programs, government employment, and public educational institutions. The equal rights provision of the Constitution would not apply directly to private associations, private employment, and private business practices. In the US political system, state governments play the most important role in family law and criminal justice. The gender gap may become, at least temporarily, a more powerful determinant of national policy. Women will be represented in the higher echelons of the military services and government bureaucracies." @default.
