Layered clays were functionalized with various polymers through different polymerization methods, such as (1) controlled and living polymerization, (2) intercalation chemistry, (3) in situ polymerization, (4) solution polymerization, (5) ring-opening, (6) grafting-from and grafting-onto polymerization, (7) emulsion, and (8) melt intercalation, and other techniques. This chapter summarizes the recent progress in various aspects such as chemistry of clays, chemical methodologies for synthesizing layered clays and organoclay–functionalized polymers (commodity, engineering, high-performance, electrically conducting, and biotypes), methods of polymerization, modification, intercalation chemistry, polymerization mechanism, chemical bonding between modified clays and functional groups of polymers, structure–property relations, influence of clays on physicochemical and other properties (thermal, mechanical, barrier, conducting, rheology, and flame retardancy), mechanistic understanding for enhancement of properties, and their applications. The possible future directions for this special class of layered organic–inorganic hybrids are discussed." @default.
