- W2904354008 abstract "The history of sport in Australia has paid little attention to the role that universities played in the development of sport in the wider community with most writing on university sport limited to sport within the university. This article redresses this oversight in the literature to illustrate how the University of Sydney played a highly significant role in the development of sport in NSW during the second half of the nineteenth century. In drawing attention of the role that sport in the University of Sydney played in the development of sport in the wider community we challenge some accepted orthodoxy in the history of sport in Australia. While the bulk of the sport history literature suggests that sport in Australia developed from schools before being adopted in universities, we demonstrate in this paper that many sports were played at the University of Sydney before schools adopted a games culture. In fact we argue that university graduates assisted in the development of sport in schools and in the wider community in Sydney, across NSW and having an influence on the development of sport at a national level." @default.
