- W290435917 abstract "Irving Sigel's (1981) genial and tolerant overview of the child de velopment research in learning and cognition during the past dec ade offers a positive and optimistic evaluation. Is such a judgment justified? To answer this question, a combined methodological historical analysis of some major themes will be offered. The nature of progress. One can easily get the impression from Sigel's review that progress in developmental psychology can be measured by the increasing amount of data that are being collected. Psychologists have reached a stage in their history in which this as sumption must be seriously challenged, along with the related no tion that theoretical formulations can be judged by their heuristic value. Psychologists, including those in the area of developmental psy chology, must face up to the fact that much of their psychological research is trivial. That is to say, nothing would have been lost if the research had not been done, and that, having been done, it exerts no influence on psychology now or in the future. Only a small pro portion of papers are cited with any frequency, and even a smaller percent are attended to after the passage of a decade or more. Admittedly, clear-cut criteria to identify potentially significant investigations are impossible and some unimportant research is un avoidable because some conjectures, reasonable at the time they are formulated, will not lead to any payoff. But, this should not shield us" @default.
