- W2904368575 abstract "The prenatal and neonatal periods are very important to promote good welfare outcomes. Positive environments help to create resilient phenotypes and the sequelae resulting from excessive challenges in prenatal and neonatal periods can compromise animal welfare. We demonstrated that pigs weaned before three weeks of age had compromised social behaviour, characterized by an increase in aggression, resulting from memory deficits. Stress responsive genes in the brain were altered in prematurely weaned pigs and these changes made the animals less competent in forming memories of social encounters or remembering familiar animals. We demonstrated that the presence of older pigs together with recently weaned animals, decreased aggression and facilitated social behaviour. Negative human animal interactions pregnant sheep can result in more fearful offspring, with cognitive deficits. Spine morphology in apical neurons in brain tissue of the offspring of negatively treated ewes favoured less stable synapses. Spine density was increased in apical neurons of negatively treated offspring and we interpreted that as a mechanism to compensate for the poor quality of the synapse forming structures. LPS challenge, which increase cytokines and cortisol, in late pregnant ewes compromised carcass quality, testicular weight and cognitive outcomes in lambs. Goat kids born from negatively treated animals were slower to start nursing and to play when compared to the offspring of positively treated animals. Strategies to reduce hunger in sows, such as the use of fibre in the diet, produced less aggressive offspring at the time of weaning. Our hypothesis is that the survival, welfare and health outcomes of the offspring are related to the conditions of their parents, starting from the period prior to mating. The impact of these challenges can be mitigated by the quality of life of the female in the gestational period and the quality of the maternal-filial relationship in the neonatal period.
