• W2904825315 abstract "This study highlights differences in mechanical variables of the preflight phase of the Yurchenko layout vault, between two levels of performance abilities, that of a local gymnast who represented Singapore on the 2003 South East Asian Games and those of Olympic level gymnasts. The data of the Olympic gymnasts were obtained from Koh et al. (2003), Kwon et al. (1990), and Nelson et al. (1985). Filming was conducted using a 2-D high-speed camera system recording at 200 Hz and digitizing was completed using the PEAK Motus software. For the local gymnast, the mean shoulder flexion angle was larger than the published data, while the body angle of attack was smaller than the same data of an Olympic gymnast (Koh et al., 2003). The local gymnast experienced a large reduction (2.50 m.s -1 ) in the mean centre of mass (CM) horizontal velocity due to horse impact. This was inconsistent with published data of Olympic gymnasts. However, the increase in her CM vertical velocity at horse take-off facilitated a good post-flight. Impact duration of 0.28s reported for the local gymnast was also longer by (0.08-0.10 s) when compared to the published data of Olympic gymnasts. This would suggest that the lower body contact angle led to poor impact dynamics. The date gathered indicates that the research participant has minimal technique similarities to those of Olympic level gymnasts in the preflight phase. Through such empirical data, valuable insights into the technique required for higher level performances of the Yurchenko vault are obtained. The sports biomechanist can provide coaches with eth scientific basis for future intervention programs that could enhance the performance of this vault." @default.
