- W2905288082 abstract "Fall-calving commercial Angus heifers (315 ± 49.3 kg) were utilized to determine the effects of trace mineral injections during gestation on pre-weaning calf performance and mineral status. Dams received three previous subcutaneous trace mineral (MM; Multimin90) or saline (CON) injections approximately 90 d apart. These treatments were maintained and subsequent injections were given 205, 114, and 44 ± 26 d prepartum. Dams were provided free-choice, inorganic minerals formulated to meet or exceed NRC recommendations. Data were reported from 174 calves (n = 87 calves/treatment). Calf blood and liver samples were collected 5 ± 3 d postpartum from a subset of calves (13 CON and 18 MM) to determine trace mineral status. Milk samples were collected from dams of this subset at 73 ± 26 d postpartum for trace mineral analysis. Calves were weaned and BW were collected at 159 ± 26 d postpartum. Calf performance including calving date, birth BW, health, weaning BW, and ADG were collected. Calf birth BW was lesser (P = 0.02) for MM than CON calves. However, there was no difference (P = 0.61) across treatments in Julian birth date. Plasma Cu, Mn, Se, and Zn concentrations were not different (P ≥ 0.13) at birth. Additionally, liver Mn, Se, and Zn concentrations were not different (P ≥ 0.41) at birth. However, MM calves had greater (P = 0.03) liver Cu concentrations at birth compared to CON. Milk concentrations of Mn, Se, and Zn were not different (P ≥ 0.42), with Cu concentrations below detectable limits for both treatments. Calf morbidity and mortality were not different (P ≥ 0.43) between treatments. Additionally, calf weaning BW and ADG were not different (P ≥ 0.87). Maternal supplementation with an injectable trace mineral resulted in lighter birth BW and improved calf Cu status at birth, however, there was no effect on calf pre-weaning health or performance." @default.
