- W290534000 abstract "Although there is no research evidence that links quantity of vocaliza tion in the first year of life with quantity of or skill in verbal expression later in life, yet there is evidence that the amount an infant vocalizes is influenced by the same social environmental factors that affect rate and complexity and abstractness of child language. How and how much a par ental figure responds to a child's pre-linguistic or linguistic utterances has been found in most studies to be crucial to the quantity of the infant's vocalization and the quality of the child's language development. Social class distinctions in intellectual performance have been found consistently to center around language skills, with parental stimuli to the development of language as a mediating variable. Hess and Shipman (1965) found that four-year-old middle-class children already have a more elaborate language style with greater degree of complexity and higher level of abstraction than lower-class four-year-olds. The most obvious social class difference in the mothers' behaviors was in the total amount of verbal out put in response to questions and tasks asking for a verbal response. Simi larly, at six months of age, lower-class infants have been found to vocalize less than do middle-class infants (Irwin, 1960). When lower-class infants were read to for fifteen or twenty minutes a day, their rate of vocalization increased (Irwin, 1960). Institutional infants do not vocalize as much as family infants (Brodbeck & Irwin, 1946). Yet, when such infants' lives at the age of six months were enriched by increased contact with a caretaker adult for eight weeks, not only did the children vocalize more during this period (Rheingold, 1956), but one year later continued to vocalize more in the presence of a strange adult than comparable control children." @default.
