- W2906003085 abstract "Background: Manganese (Mn) is an essential nutrient, but is also neurotoxic at high doses. Few studies have examined the effects of prenatal Mn exposure on neurodevelopment in infants and young children. Methods: We conducted a birth cohort study (Infants' Environmental Health Study, ISA) among families living near banana plantations aerially sprayed with Mn-containing fungicide mancozeb in Costa Rica. We measured Mn concentrations in maternal hair and blood samples collected at different times during pregnancy. We assessed cognitive, language, motor, and social-emotional development in 344 children at 12 months of age using Bayley Scales of Infant Development-III. We tested for linear and nonlinear relationships and assessed effect modification by child sex. We adjusted multivariable regression models for maternal education, parity, gestational age, and child's age and sex. Results: Geometric mean (GSD) Mn concentration in hair was 1.9 (2.9) μg/g; mean (SD) Mn concentration in maternal blood was 24.4 (6.2) μg/L. We observed a negative association of maternal hair Mn concentrations during the second half of pregnancy and averaged during pregnancy with cognitive development in girls (β for 10-fold increase=-2.7; 95% CI: -5.8, 0.3; and -2.8; 95% CI: -5.9, 0.2; respectively), but not in boys (β=1.7; 95% CI: -1.2, 4.5; and 1.7; 95% CI: -1.1, 4.5; respectively). We also found a negative association of maternal hair Mn concentrations during the second half of pregnancy and averaged during pregnancy with social-emotional development in boys (β for 10-fold increase=-4.1; 95% CI: -7.6, -0.6; and -5.0; 95% CI: -8.7, -1.4; respectively), but not in girls (β=-1.0; 95% CI: -5.3, 3.4; and -1.2; 95% CI: -5.4, 3.1; respectively). Null associations were observed between maternal blood Mn concentrations during pregnancy and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 12 months. Conclusions: Our preliminary results suggest that prenatal Mn may be adversely related to cognitive development in girls and social-emotional development in boys at 12 months of age. Next steps will include examining associations of maternal Mn concentrations by trimester of pregnancy with neurodevelopmental outcomes at 12 months and assessing effect modification by prenatal lead exposure." @default.
