- W2906061457 abstract "Background: Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the most common causative pathogens of nosocomial pneumonia (NP). Linezolid is a first-line antibiotic for MRSA NP. Recent evidence on the use of telavancin, a novel lypoglycopeptide anti-MRSA antibiotic, proved clinical merits. Aims and Objectives: We appraised the effects of telavancin vs. linezolid on lung MRSA burden and renal function. Methods: Eighteen pigs mechanically ventilated up to 76h. Lungs were challenged with MRSA to develop NP. Pigs were randomized to receive saline (control), 22.5 mg/Kg of telavancin daily, or 600 mg of linezolid every 12 hours. Upon NP diagnosis and every 24h thereafter, culture of tracheal aspirates was carried out. Furthermore, creatinine was assessed daily. Upon autopsy, culture of lung tissue was performed. Results: All animals (weight 32.1±1.2 Kg) completed the study. Throughout the study, mean±standard deviation MRSA tracheal secretions concentration in the telavancin, linezolid and control group was 3.5±2.1, 4.6±0.9 and 4.9±1.7 log cfu/mL, respectively (p=0.01). Upon autopsy, lung tissue MRSA burden median [interquartile range] was 0.9 [1.4], 1.7 [7.3] and 1.8 [6.5], in the telavancin, linezolid and control groups, respectively (p=0.26).
