- W2906218095 abstract "The possibility of drug-induced skin pigmentation should be investigated in patients presenting with unexplained pigmented lesions, especially elderly individuals who are more likely to be receiving therapy with multiple agents. The appearance of pigmentation on sun-exposed areas and/or of unusual shades, such as red, yellow or purple, point to the possibility that pigmentation is associated with drug therapy. Diagnosis may be complicated by the patient failing to report all drugs they have received. In addition, the physician may discount the responsible drug as the cause of pigmentation because of a long interval between the implementation of treatment and the appearance of the discolouration. Histological evidence may assist with the diagnosis. Ultimately, only the fading of the dyschromia after discontinuation of the suspected drug confirms the diagnosis. However, the pigmentation may persist for a long time (or even be permanent) afterwards and cessation of treatment is not always possible. Symptomatic therapeutic measures are of limited efficacy. Sun protection is the primary means of avoiding the development of drug-induced skin pigmentation." @default.
