- W2906741379 abstract "The native African Imoinda is beautiful, strong, and virtuous in Aphra Behn's novel, but she plays a clearly subordinate role to that of her husband and fellow African, Oroonoko. She remains an exotic, and her sometime status as the main female character is consistently threatened by the involvement of the white female narrator. This chapter considers the historical reality of the white Imoinda on stage and explores her effect on audiences and her connection to British anti-slavery. The fact that Southerne's Imoinda is just as supremely faithful to her black husband as Behn's black Imoinda undercuts any argument that her whiteness weakened the anti-racist and anti-slavery potential of the play. The anti-slavery movement had become an arena for British women's activism by the 1780s, when several prominent women wrote and published antislavery literature.20 In 1788, the prominent conservative reformer Hannah More specifically invoked the 'plaintive Southeme' and Oroonoko in her abolitionist piece, 'Slavery, A Poem.'" @default.
