- W2907104003 abstract "It seems so appropriate that B U. K. Li would be awarded the first NASPGHAN Master Educator Award for Excellence, which recognizes a person who has made significant and sustained contributions to the field through education scholarship on a national or international basis.Dr Li retired as Professor of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin in 2017. He was a graduate of Princeton (1971) and Kansas University School of Medicine (1974). He completed an internship in medicine at Kansas University, and then went on to do his pediatric residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr Li is an expert in cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) and spearheaded the effort to define and standardize the diagnostic and management protocols. He has served as medical advisor to the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association for 25 years and coauthored the NASPGHAN CVS guidelines. He has enjoyed National Institute of Health funding for his research, has published extensively on CVS and given more than 100 Grand Rounds on the topic. Dr Li joined Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in 2006 as Professor of Pediatric and Director of Pediatric Fellowship Education. He developed a robust 3-year Joint Fellowship Curriculum to fulfill core competencies in teaching, research, and scholarly activities and leadership development for 78 concurrent fellows in 13 subspecialty programs. As chair of the NASPGHAN Training and Professional Education Committees from 2001 to 2006, he developed the format for Teaching and Tomorrow to help attract the best residents in our field. Dr Li also developed the format for the first year fellows conference and initiated career development content into second and third year fellows conference. He drafted the Uniform Date of Offer (Black Monday) as a precursor of the match. He significantly revised the Annual Postgraduate course. He championed fellow education initiatives and coedited the NASPGHAN Fellows Concise Review of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Dr Li's passion for teaching was evident early in his academic career. While a junior faculty member at UW-Madison, he was awarded clinical teacher of the year. He has been a constant advocate for inclusion and diversity and developed a 27-hour Diversity Module for the first year medical students at Ohio State University. He founded the national Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association in 1995 to counterbalance subtle educational bias. This organization now has 90 medical school chapters, and Dr Li has remained an active advocate and speaker. Dr Li served as the first Asian-American president of NASPGHAN from 2008 to 2010. Dr Li is a major force behind the Medical Education Special Interest group in NASPGHAN. His passion for education culminated in to the development of the Teri Li Award for Young Educators in memory of his wife in 2012. Dr Li considers the receipt of the Master Educator Award to be the highlight of his academic career. Dr Li is deeply grateful for the support of his many extraordinary colleagues, and they, in turn, consider him to be an education superhero. He is loved and supported by his children Rachel and Ben, and his 3 grandchildren Jack (age 7), Naomi (age 5), and Flora (4 months)." @default.
