- W2907251761 abstract "This chapter discusses alcohol consumption and effects on the lower urinary tract and urine retention. The world over, alcohol intake is perhaps the most common socially acceptable form of recreational drug use. There is no strong evidence for long-term direct effects of alcohol on the urinary tract. Alcohol intake, especially when consumed in large volumes, correlates with the acute retention of urine and intraperitoneal rupture of the urinary bladder (IPRB). Employing recent advances in soft tissue biomechanics, theories for the pathophysiology of these alcohol-associated phenomena are presented. The science of statistical mechanics helps in proposing that acute urinary retention and chronic urinary retention correspond to first order and second order phase transitions respectively. IPRB may be usefully modeled as the consequence of a propagated shock wave along the wall of the bladder. The study of biomechanics could help in making a move from vitalism to mechanism in explaining the effect of large volume alcohol intake in the urinary tract." @default.
